Atlanta leaders are reconsidering how they dismantle homeless camps after the death of Cornelius Taylor, who died after the tent he was inside collapsed on Jan. 16.
The effort to relocate about 75 people living in tents beneath an overpass near the Superdome began in the days leading up to pop star's shows.
"I never thought my own mother would end up overnighting on a bus bench in her late 60s. But in other ways, it was not a complete surprise."
The order makes clear that the decision to remove the encampments remains in the hands of local authorities.
The 6-3 decision "permits punishing homeless people with no access to shelter for sleeping in public," Sotomayor said in her dissent.
Homeless advocates warn that the ruling could lead states and cities to effectively ban homeless people from living there.
