Redistricting
"This is what happens when Republican state leaders publicly call for us to be 'hunted down,'" one Texas Democratic lawmaker said Wednesday.
Two prominent Democratic governors also warned they were ready to trigger redistricting in their states if Texas' off-cycle remap proceeds.
The two states' existing maps putting Democrats within just three seats of reclaiming a U.S. House majority in the midterms.
With Republicans in full control of the government in the Lone Star State, Democrats are using all their options.
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The mid-decade gerrymander aims to blunt any gains Democrats may see in the 2026 midterms ― and is likely to spark an arms race.
The White House is focusing on redistricting efforts beyond Texas to help Republicans maintain control of the U.S. House in 2026.
Democrats asked the court to redraw the maps, which would have put two of the state's six congressional seats currently held by Republicans into play.
The move would have taken power away from the Republican-dominated Ohio Redistricting Commission.
The Supreme Court is "not supposed to be so fearful of telling discriminators, including States, to stop discriminating,” the liberal justice wrote of the 6-3 ruling.
The court’s decision leaves the 1st District lines that a lower court said amounted to a “bleaching” in place.
